A Monday Post...

Running –
Last week I ran 31.78 miles. Mostly around the neighborhood. It is getting hot in Denver now. I need to find a shadier run course.

A friend came by this weekend and told me what a great tan I have this year. I told him that outside running will do that to a person. I am getting my vitamin D most naturally this season.

Training –
I have changed my training schedule for Chicago. The longer runs (over 17 miles) have been bumped up a mile or two. That way, I will have runs under my belt of at least 2 @ 20 miles (1 @ 22 miles), and others at or really near it.
Thanks for the input!

Soon -
Next week, I will run a 10-mile long run. Planning on taking the camera to show everyone my current favorite course. Some of us bloggers did that last year and I got quite a kick out of it.

Cameras –
Recently at the Colorado Colfax Half-Marathon, I did take a camera. It was my Flip Ultra video. I pulled it out twice and I thought I got some on-the-run videos. I didn’t. It was frustrating to attempt to run, try to capture a video, and replace everything in my pack. What does it boil down to? I won’t take the Flip Ultra! It just gets more and more frustrating to use. Anyone want a Flip Ultra cheap?

I love my Canon camera. It is a medium sized 7.1 megapixel image stabilized digital camera. It is quick and easy to use, but it somewhat large and bulky. Both stills and video are excellent on this camera. It is somewhat large, though, and takes up most of my running pack space.

If anyone out there takes a camera with them on their runs, what do you take? Would you recommend it to a fellow runner? Why? Why not?

Nice mileage! And I like the new plan.

I have a huge monstrous lens on my camera so its not going on a run with me! If I had something more compact,I may consider it.

Why did the flip cam annoy you so much?
I tried once bringing with me a compact camera in a technical pouch made for runners to bring a bottle of water with them: weird experience... it took a while to find the right position to be confortable and I was a bit distrated by it. You also need to accept the fact to stop, take a picture, and run again... I tended to be rather rigid with the "don't ever stop untill you have finished" mentality, so also that can be a problem.
Talking about myself: fortunately today there's the sun! It has been poring rain since 3 weeks, we had serious floods and unfortunately some deaths here in Piedmont, Italy. Here are some pictures of the Po river: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=piena+torino+2008&m=text This is Val Pellice, where there have been the worst disasters: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Val+Pellice+2008&m=text

Hey Charlie,

Your plan looks great! I just realized looking over your plan, that your start date for your marathon training starts the day before my training for my half. And that your marathon and my half marathon are happening on the same day, Oct 12th. COOOOOOL!!!!

We can train together and keep each other motivated/encouraged!!

Here's hoping you find more shady routes to run!!

It's a pretty ambitious training plan for a first-time marathoner, IMO, but if you have no problems handling the long run build-up then it should prepare you well for your race. Remember though that it's better to be 10% under-trained than 10% over-trained. Probably the number one cause of injury in marathon training is doing too much too soon.

As for cameras, I use a Sony Cybershot DCS W30 (~$200). It takes pretty good pictures even when I'm running. Don't know about video, though, as I've not done that yet during my races. I carry mine in the front holster of my Fuel Belt in a little pouch to protect it from sweat.

Thanks for the comments. I do use sportstrack. I use it pretty regularly. I only update it once a week. I had to put myself on a schedule for blogging and tracking my run logs. I was on them entirely to much.

Hi Charlie - I think I'll be Hal Higdoning it from next Monday so we'll be doing it side by side on other sides of the world... And as for cameras - I have been through all sorts of fancy cameras but love my canon ixus which - thanks to a nifty and tiny lowepro case - I can clip on to a fuelbelt and which seems really tough and good. My mom filmed me running the Amsterdam marathon on it and I put the video up - it was fine! I haven't filmed while running though maybe will try. All in all it's a great little thing, weighs nothing and does the job. Works for me!

I know what you mean about the heat - I myself am looking for cooler pastures, at least some of the time. I realized today that some heat training is always good, especially if that is the type of weather you will be expecting at your race.

As for cameras, sorry to hear your flip ultra video doesn't work well for runs. I don't know people like DC Rainmaker manage to take so many photos while racing, including of himself. It's beyond me. I only take one when I know the clock ain't tickin'. I have a canon pocket camera 8 megapix, which I loev also - but as you mention, it's kinda bulky.

Good luck with your plan Charlie. Your base mileage has been really good leading up (better than mine), so I think you'll have no problems with this plan. You can alway adjust if need be.

Running negative splits ... because you broke out in joy.. well, maybe that's the real way to do negative splits?

My Panasonic camera is 4 X 2 1/2 X 1 3/4 and weighs 8 1/2 oz. Not carrying it .. would I be faster? Nor worth the trade off to not have the pictures.

Sweet Pea's camera is 5 1/4 X 3 3/8 X 1
and weighs just 5 1/4 ounces.

I think that optical stabilation on both helps, but I still try to be motionless when I press the button.

Hers is newer.. I like it better .. I think.. but hate to spend the money... I don't wear my glasses when I run .. and everything on hers is smaller to see.

Ooops, well, that's "stabilization."
