Update!

I ran 26 miles even last week. I am trying to up the runs to include two 10Ks per week. I am working on the speed, as well.

I have 87.35 miles for the month of January and, coincidentally, I have run 87.35 miles in 2009. Hmmm…

I went to the Doctor last week. I had the blood lab work done the week before.

My Numbers -

The Good News? I am healthy. Most of the numbers are within range.

The Bad News? Triglycerides are out of range and in the high end. That means that I am getting fat and I need to lose some weight. I guess that I have become complacent since my marathon run. I am running, but I am also eating. The Doctor suggested that I lose 10 – 15 pounds.

“Do I cut out more fat from my diet?” I asked.

“No,” He said, “You just need to push yourself away from the table earlier.”

Not a difficult goal. I can do that.

My Cough –

I did mention to the Doctor that I have a cough. It is not a cold (or flu, or pneumonia, or anything of that ilk). My lungs are clear. It happens mostly when I run. It can be a deep, hacking cough when it comes on.

After some questions, he stated that it is one of two things –
1. Exercise induced asthma (like I run a lot or something).
2. An anti-hypertension drug induced cough.

He asked if I wanted to test it yet or wait. It hasn’t been too bad yet, but it is becoming noticeable. I told him it could wait.

He said that the test is easy - A pulmonary function test, then a run (he suggested stairs), until I cough, then back for another pulmonary function test again.

We set it up so I could contact him if the cough gets to be worse.

Some Fun –
I cleared the marathon with him the last time that I saw him. I made sure that I wore the Las Vegas Marathon registration shirt AND the Finisher’s Medal for the appointment.

The Doctor and I are about the same age. He is a runner (and responsible for me starting to run).

We talked about the marathon, the experience, and about running in general.

When I was preparing to go, he told me that I have surpassed him as a runner, and shook my hand. “Good job!” He said!

Finally -
I am breaking in a new pair of shoes. I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair. They are the same as the old pair (Mizuno Wave Alchemy). Much brighter and cleaner, but the very same model! So far, after one run, they feel the same and that is great! There is something to be said for consistency.

Good to hear from you, Charlie. Sounds like a mostly clean bill of health. You'll take that weight off quickly, I'm sure!

Yay for the good numbers!!

Glad to hear you think pushing yourself away from the table earlier is easy (many don't). Hope the cough is nothing serious.

I got 26 miles in too. We are kickin butt my friend.

Good check up. I bet you are the doc's star patient. Not too many people actually listen when the doctor says exercise and lose weight.

CONGRATS on the mostly-excellent stats! Super!

Keep us posted on the 10-15 pound process. I'll be on that train soon enough!

Your doc most definitely should be proud of you. Everyone else is!

Great job, man. My distance was about the same last week. The Doctor visit went well overall then?

"“No,” He said, “You just need to push yourself away from the table earlier.”

Not a difficult goal. I can do that."

That is, by far, the most difficult thing to do for me. In fact, my weight has gone UP over the month of January despite the fact that I've done more exercise this month than any other in years.

Glad to see/hear you're doing well. What's up with all those miles in 2009? Can you save me some, please?!

Oh yes!! Good job, Marathoner.

Reading labels for sneaky sugars, corn syrup, etc. might be helpful.
No need to push away the whole fruits and vegetables.

Healthy!! Congratulations.

Do you cough when you run inside too? Because if is only outside it can be just the cold weather. A researcher, Rundell, from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, (link below) proved that the dryness of cold air causes the airway narrowing, a term he prefers to the more common exercise-induced asthma. To diminish this problem, Rundell suggests using a scarf that will trap your natural water vapor when you exhale, and then allow you to "recycle" it when you inhale.

I use neck gaiters when running outside if is too cold, as I already suffer asthma, the cold weather exacerbates the cough.

Hey Charlie, I could use some company on the PFA diet. If you're willing to be really compulsive about planning EVERTHING you eat on their website, and adding strength training, I think its a good plan. I don't so much need to lose weight, but move it around. OK losing wouldn't hurt, but I really want to shift the spare tyre - while gaining muscle. Have a look - www.physiquetransformation.com

Hey hey Mr. Marathon Man! Do you think it's the cold dry air running outdoors that's giving you the coughs? It happens to me! Thinking of getting a neck warmer that I can pull over my mouth for runs. That might help!

Interesting post, Charlie. Nice comments about your doc. I went on hypertension meds 3 yrs ago, and the side-effects of the first round (a diuretic) were unacceptable so that we went back to the drawing board. The ace inhibitor is more acceptable but it supposedly has the side-effect of a dry rasping cough. I have noticed that when I race (expend effort) I am forever trying to clear my throat with dry, rasping efforts (and coughing). I have slowed down, and think it realtes somewhat to the meds, but I am the age I am. I have come to think of it as the accommodation I have to make with my life (slower, lower b/p, annoying cough in races). Oh well. Keep on truckin'!
